Signs of a damaged drain
- A blockage that keeps coming back in the same place
- Persistent bad smells outside
- Damp patches, or paving and ground sinking near a drain run
- Water not draining away even after the drain has been cleared
- Rats around the property, which can get in through broken drains
Find the problem first
The first step is establishing exactly what’s wrong and where. A CCTV drain survey shows the condition of the pipe from the inside and pinpoints the damaged section. That means the repair is planned around what’s actually there, and nothing more is dug up than needs to be.
Repairing the damaged section
Depending on what the survey shows, a repair might mean opening up the ground and replacing a damaged length of pipe, or renewing a longer section of the run where the pipe has failed. Once the repair is done, the drain can be cleared and checked so it’s working properly.
Common causes of drain damage
Older clay pipes crack and their joints shift over time. Roots work their way into joints looking for water. Ground movement, heavy vehicles over shallow pipes, and building work nearby can all crack or displace pipework. Knowing the cause helps decide on the right repair.
